When Massage Helps—and When It Doesn’t: What to Know
Because Great Care Starts with the Right Information
Massage therapy can be transformative—relieving pain, calming the nervous system, and helping you reconnect with your body. But as much as we believe in the power of massage at Seven Senses Spa, we also believe in being honest: massage isn’t always the right solution for every concern.
Knowing when massage can help—and when you might need to see a different type of provider—is part of receiving the best care possible. Here's what to know:
✅ When Massage Helps
Massage therapy is incredibly effective for a wide range of physical and emotional conditions. If you’re dealing with any of the following, a massage can absolutely make a positive difference:
🔹 Chronic Tension & Muscle Tightness
Massage increases circulation, improves range of motion, and relieves the habitual tightness we carry in areas like the shoulders, neck, low back, and hips.
🔹 Stress & Anxiety
Massage reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) and boosts feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine—making it an excellent support for emotional well-being.
🔹 Fatigue & Poor Sleep
If your nervous system is constantly in “fight-or-flight” mode, massage helps shift it into “rest-and-digest,” supporting better sleep, energy levels, and overall calm.
🔹 Mild Aches, Stiffness, or Soreness
Whether from working out, sitting too long, or daily wear and tear, massage helps flush out lactic acid and relax overworked muscles.
🔹 Lymphatic Support & Detox
Techniques like dry brushing or lymphatic drainage help reduce swelling, support the immune system, and promote gentle detoxification.
⚠️ When Massage May Not Be the Right Choice
Massage is powerful—but it has its limits. In some cases, you’ll want to consult a medical provider before—or instead of—booking a massage.
🚫 Acute Injuries (Recent Sprains, Tears, or Inflammation)
Massage can aggravate injuries if they’re still swollen or healing. Wait until inflammation subsides and your doctor clears you for bodywork.
🚫 Fever or Illness
If you're feeling under the weather, massage can worsen symptoms or spread infection. Always reschedule if you’re sick—your body (and our therapists) will thank you.
🚫 Severe Skin Conditions or Open Wounds
While we can work around minor skin sensitivities, open cuts, rashes, or contagious skin conditions should be fully healed before treatment.
🚫 Blood Clots or Certain Circulatory Issues
Massage can dislodge clots or interfere with certain medical conditions. Always consult your physician if you have a history of thrombosis, uncontrolled blood pressure, or heart conditions.
🚫 Undiagnosed Pain
If you're experiencing sudden or unexplained pain—especially sharp, shooting, or radiating pain—it's important to rule out serious medical conditions before trying massage therapy.
